C.V. & Other Info
April 26, 2007
Much of my work lies between the disciplines of sculpture and embroidery, since typically it consists of stitched slate or other suitable stone. Sometimes the work is primarily sculptural – with stitch used as a means of mark making or as an aid to construction. At other times the work is primarily embroidery – with stitch the main element of the work.
I started stitching and making objects in paper and cardboard at around age 6. Later I worked in a variety of jobs (including theatrical props making and oriental carpet repair) eventually becoming studio assistant to tapestry maker Marta Rogoyska in the 1980’s
In 1991 I attended art school as a mature student (around 40yrs. old at the time) taking foundation studies at City of London Polytechnic and subsequently a three years Textile degree at Goldsmiths’ College, University of London. I have also attended short courses in stonecarving at The Portland Sculpture Trust and Kendal College, and drawing at the Princes Drawing School. In 2007 I was awarded a ‘Scholar’ bursary by the Embroiderers’ Guild.
I now live in the English Lake District, where the rocky landscape provides both materials and inspiration.
